Let me explain...
In November of 2006, I had the privilege of attending a rural African Women’s Conference. And while the people and the country were beautiful, I witnessed too many children and families who go for days without food, water, or shelter...
...and who have no hope for the future.
Let me say that again...and please take it in...
Children who have NO HOPE for the future!
It’s difficult for us to imagine what it’s like to live like this. Seeing it first-hand was one of the most moving experiences of my life.
The facts are heartbreaking:
- Every 4 seconds in Africa, a child dies from hunger or violence...
- 3,000 children die of malaria every day...
- 17 million Africans have died of AIDS...25 million children are infected...13.2 million have lost one or both parents to AIDS—and this will reach 20 million by 2010...
- 30,000 children must flee their homes every night to escape capture as soldiers or sex slaves.
- 44 million African children have never attended school and have no opportunity to do so.
As I witnessed the despair of these people, I felt overwhelmed by the scope of the situation and didn’t know what I could do to help.
When I returned home I did some research and learned experts overwhelmingly agree that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and supporting these children in taking control of their lives.
According to the United Nations, education has a larger impact than any other form of help. Evidence shows that simply sending children to school literally saves lives and...
...breaks the cycle of poverty!
Send children to school. Sounds simple right? The problem is that what many people may take for granted as a basic human right is nearly non-existent for the children I met in these African villages.
- There are few schools in Uganda and throughout Africa.
- When there is a school, most children walk several hours one way to go to a school
- 75 to 100 children are packed into one small room designed for 30 children.
- These “schools” are nothing more than shacks made of crumbling bricks, old wood, and dirt floors. They continue to be used because the community has no other solution.
- Most communities have nothing at all, and no resources to do anything about it.
- Many of the families who rely on their children to work, walk miles each day just to access clean water and support the family... simply cannot let the children go to school or they would risk perishing under such horrific conditions.
I am not sharing this with you to break your heart or make you feel bad...
I am telling you this because this is the first time in HISTORY that it is possible to end this in our lifetime. Leading experts all agree that our world has more than enough resources if we care enough to do something -- to take action and help empower these children and their families to end the cycle of poverty.

As organizations dedicated to ending poverty throughout the world, our in-country partners have created a system to empower these poverty stricken communities by bringing education, food, clean water and life saving services to them.
They have found that by building more schools, providing medical necessities and education to prevent disease and a local source for clean water, the families are not only capable of sending their children to school...but are eager to do so.

When a local water source is available, the children do not have to miss school to make sure their family has water for the day
- When a hot meal is provided at school, it is quite often the only meal the family can make sure their children receive, so they will send their children to school for that hot meal.
- Primary education will PREVENT 7,000,000 new AIDS infections
